I usually woke up at 8 a.m. and went to the press center to check the daily schedule of briefings and press conferences, usually held by the United Nations officials or disaster mitigation team chief, Alwi Shihab.
It was challenging to visit different refugee camps to find soft stories, human interest stories. Then, I went back to the press center in between to cover the press conference of the day.
It was heart breaking when I saw these survivors fight for food and secondhand clothing, which they said were limited and inadequate. Emerging to a glaring, full noon, it was time to go back to the press center to write stories and race against time, always fearing that the internet connection would come crashing down.
And after everything was done, only then I remembered to eat. Most times, I only ate once a day because you always had to rush and it was difficult to find food. You had to travel quite far, about a 30 – to 45 minute trip by car to find fresh food.

The following text is for Question 9 -  12
(UN 2011)

The Japanese traditional house made of wood is expected to last about twenty years before having to be repaired or rebuilt. Each year it is depreciated.
The interior design is what really sets the Japanese traditional house. With the exception of the entry way (genkan), the kitchen (daidokoro), the bathing room (sento) and the toilet (banjo), the rooms in a Japanese traditional house does not have a designated use.
A room can easily be a living area, a bedroom, a dining room or any combination.
Large rooms are partitioned by fusuma, sliding doors made of wood and thick paper. The paper used for fusuma is called washi. These sliding doors can be removed whenever a larger space is needed.
In large traditional houses, there was one large room, or ima (living space) that could be divided as needed. The smaller rooms like kitchen, bath and toilet were small extensions to one side. Rouka, or wooden-floored hallways, follow the edge of the home. Windows are made of wood and shoji paper, which is thin enough to let the light shine through.
Even Japanese modern houses tend to have one traditional Japanese room, called a washitsu. This room has tatami mats on the floor as used in Japanese traditional house. Tatami are thick straw mats covered with stitched, woven rushes. Tatami are smooth and firm enough to walk on, while making a sleeping surface more comfortable than wood or stone.
The genkan is usually a step below the level of the house. When people enter the home, they leave their shoes in the genkan, pointed toward the door so they only need to slip them on when they are ready to go out. Indoor slippers are often worn inside the house.
The kitchen in most traditional Japanese homes will contain a stove with a very small oven and broiler and a electric refrigerator. Counter space for food preparation and a sink are also located in the kitchen.
The bathing room contains a tub and is often waterproof. An adjacent area is available for showering. The Japanese re-use bathwater, either for other bathers or for washing laundry, so it is important not to dirty the water with soap and dirt. Dirty portions of the body can be washed before stepping into the bath.

Mangrove Trees
A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizhopora. Mangroves have special aerial roots and salt-filtering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water is salty, but not as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity, while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some prefer areas that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea water everyday during high tide. Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of mangrove roots that play an important role for it:
1.support root which directly pierce the soil
2. level-growing roots which twist upwards and downwards, with the upward twists emerging on the water surface
3. level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
Any part of a root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. As the soil begins to build up, these roots produce additional roots that become embedded in the soil.

1.    The main idea of the text is …
A.    Mangroves grow on dry land.

A.    need salt to grow.
B.     grow on dry land.
C.     grow on sheltered areas.
D.    get oxygen from the water.
E.     grow near fresh water sources.

3.    In order to grow well mangroves require the following, EXCEPT …
A.    The roots twist upwards and downwards.
B.     The trunk should be above the water surface.
C.     The leaves should be above the water surface.
D.    The trees should be firmly attached to the ground.
E.     The parts of the plant under the water should have enough salt.

Blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberry-like dark-skinned bunch grapes-contain resveratrol, a potential anticancer agent.  That’s a new finding from preliminary data from ARS collaborative studies with Rutgers University-New Jersey and Ag Canada, Kentville, Nova Scotia.  Resveratrol protects dark-skinned bunch grapes from fungal diseases and provides health benefits to consumers,  including protection from cardiovascular disease.  The compound’s anticancer potential warranted its examination in other fruits.
Using gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric procedures,  the scientists measured the resveratrol content of 30 whole fryitg samples of blueberry,  cranberry,  huckleberry, and related plants representing 5 families and 10 species of Vaccinium fruit.  They found that several samples contained varying amounts of the compound.  Analysis of extracts of the skin,  juice/pulp, and seed of muscadine grapes showed that its concentration in fruit skin was highest.  Levels in the juice/pulp were much lower than in either skin or seeds.  Researchers are continuing to analyze more Vaccinium and muscadine samples.             The coloring and spots that earned leopard gecko are only two of the outstanding physical features of this popular gecko. Leopard geckos are seven to nine inches long when they reach adulthood. They have large and big cat-like eyes. They are one of the few breeds of lizards that have eyelids. They have thick tails that comes to a point. Leopard geckos have small thin toes that do not have pads. This makes it difficult for them to do vertical climbing. Their skin is scaly and colorful. Geckod have black spots and wide black bands.
Leopard geckos are netively found in the deserts of western India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. They life in dry areas and prefer rocky floors or semi-arid grasslands. Leopard geckos are nocturnal, pending the daytime hours under rocks or inside underground caves in the daytime. Geckos love the heat, preferring temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees.
Leopard geckos have adapted well to dry, hot climates. They are nocturnal. Instead of coming out of the daytime to soak up the warmth of the sun, they are able to absorb the hat from the rocks under which they hide. Another adaptation that helps the leopard geckos survive is its ability to store fat and nutrients in its tail at times when food is hard to find.
The leopard geckos has a fairly typical lizard-life cycle with the exception of their egss. While most geckos have hard-shelled eggs, leopard gecko’s egg are soft-shelled. The female can lay up to five batches of one or two eggs during the five-month breeding season. The gecko reaches maturity in one to three years and can live between 20-25 years.

Once the female sea-horse has laid her eggs in the male creature’s pouch, she leaves. The hatching of the egg is done by the male fish. Mating begins with the male and the female sea-horse doing courtship dance. The male and the female creature swim around each other in circles.
At the end of the dance, the male appears to bow to its partner; but actually, the male is banding to pump water from his pouch. Next, the female fish lays eggs into the male’s pouch. About two hundred eggs and laid. The pouch, than close up. The female sea-horse now swims away, leaving the male sea-horse to do hatching. The eggs are hatched about a month later. The young sea-horses are ejected from the male creature’s pouch by means of muscular contraction.

The white pelicans is one the most successful fish eating birds. The success is largely due its command hunting behavior. A group, perhaps two dozen birds, will gather in a curved are some distance offshore. The birds then begin to move forwards towards the shore, beating the water furiously with their wings, driving the fish before them.
When the water is shallow enough for the birds to reach te fish, the formation breaks up as each bird dip’s it’s bill into the water to scoop up it’s meal. As the birds lift their lead, the water drains from it’s bill leaving the fish that are then swallowed.
Pelicans are among the oldest group of birds. Fossils of this genus have been found dating back 400 millions years.

Anybody who is over the age of six knows that there is nowhere safe for skateboarders to skate. This prevents young people from enjoying an active, energetic and adventurous pastime.
Just watch a local street for a short while and note the steady stream of skaters speeding up and down the footpaths. Todlers can be trampled on and old ladies can be knocked down as they struggle home carrying their cat food from supermarkets.
Skateboarding is a serious sport that improves young people’s health. It increases fitness, improves balance and strengthens the joints in knees and ankles. Although it appears to be a solo sport, when groups practice together and compete to perform stunts or runs they form firm friendships.
Young people should be prevented from becoming overweight couch potatoes. If they are actively involved in skating, they do not smoke, take drugs or break laws for fun.
Kids will always seek thrills and excitement. They need to practice their 180s, 360s and Ollie’s free from restrictions. Supply & Demand: How Market Works
The two basic terms used most often by economists are supply and demand. The amount of something that is available-the suppl-and the amount of something that people want-the demand-make up a working market. The market is the way in which an economic activity is organized between buyers and sellers through their behavior and interaction with one another.
Buyers as a group, determine the overall demand for a particular product at various prices. The interaction of buyers and sellers in the market helps to determine the market price, thereby allocating scarce goods and services efficiently. The price is taken into account when deciding how much of something to consume, and also how much to produce.
The relationship between price and quantity demanded is so universal that is called the law of demand. This law states that with all else equal, when the price of goods rises, the quantity demanded falls-and when the price falls, the quantity demanded rises. The supply curve provides the opposite information: the higher the price, the higher the quantity supplied-and the lower the price, the lower the quantity supplied.
A key function of the market is to find the equilibrium price when supply and demand are in balance. At this price, the goods supplied are equal to what is being demanded thereby bringing about the most efficient allocation of the goods. An efficient allocation of goods in a market is one in which no one can be made better off unless someone else is made worse off.

D.       The relationship between  price and quantity demanded is unique
E.        The market price is determined by the interaction of buyers and sellers in the market

3.    The “law of demand” works if ….
A.    more people buy a good when it’s getting more expensive
B.     the price of goods rises when more people buy it
C.     the price of goods falls when fewer people buy it

Tornados occur when the conditions that cause thunderstorms are unusually violent. Winds blow in opposite directions around a strong updraft start a narrow, violent whirl. Centrifugal force effectively throws the air away from the center, leaving a core of very low pressure. This is much like stirring water in a cup, thus forming a vortex like dip in the surface.
This low-pressure core acts as a partial vacuum, sometimes helping to ift the roofs off house. Most of the damage, though, results from the force of the wind itself. Around the edges of the whirl, wind speeds may reach 300 miles (480 kilometers) per hour. At first, the tornado’s funnel is whitish-gray because it is composed of minute water droplets formed as the air in the funnel expands and cools. After touching down, the include soil, tree limbs, and parts of buildings; tornados have been known to pick up automobiles, horses, and whole trees.
A tornado usually moves toward the east (or often northeast in the Northern Hemisphere and southeast Hemisphere) at 25 to 40 miles (40 to 65 kilometers) perhour. Fortunately, most tornados are less than half a mile (800 meters) wide; the edge of one may destroy all of the houses on one side of a streer while leaving those on the other side completely undamaged.
Deaths from tornados in the united states averaged roughly 100 per year over the last century. However, they have dropped somewhat in recent decades as better forecasting and warning systems have been implemented.

5.    Why have deaths from Tornado in the United States decreased in the recent decades/
A.    Most tornados are less than half a mile wide
B.     There are no more tornaados in the United States
C.     There are better forecasting and warning systems
D.    The tornado left the United States completely undamaged
E.     The people are evacuated by the United States government

6.        Why is tornado’s funnel dark as soon as it touches the ground?
A.    It contains water droplets
B.     The temperature is changed
C.     It contains building materials
D.    It whirls in high speed
E.     It has pickroppined up debris

7.    What are the impacts of Tornado?
A.    Water dropping
B.     Heavy disasters
C.     Whirl of winds
D.    Wind blowing
E.     Grey and dark sky

New glass bottles are made mainly of silica sand. The sand is melted in a furnace, at a very high temperature. Recycled glass bottles are made in a very similar way, but cost less and use up fewer natural resources.
The process begins when people take their used bottles and jars to a bottle bank. Next, the bottles and jars are taken by lorry to the recycling plant. At the plant, bottle tops and lids are removed. After that, the glass is crushed into small pieces. The crushed glass is then sent by lorry to a bottle factory. Here ,it is mixed with a small amount of silica sand. It is then melted in a furnace, at a lower temperature than a new glass. Finally, the hot liquid glass is drawn out of the furnace and fed into machinery that makes it into bottles.
The recycled glass is pure and as strong as the new glass. The glass can be recycled many times without losing its quality.

All butterflies have “complete metamorphosis”. To grow into an adult they go some through its stages and each stage has a different goal.
A butterfly starts life as a very small, round, oval or cylindrical egg. The coolest thing about butterfly eggs, especially monarch butterfly eggs, is that if you look close enough you can actually see the tiny caterpillar growing inside of it. Butterfly eggs are usually laid on the leaves of plants , so if you are actively searching for these very tiny eggs, you will have to take some time and examine quite a few leaves in order to find some.
When the egg hatches, the caterpillar will start his work and eat the leaf they were born onto. This is really important because the mother butterfly needs to lay her eggs on certain type of leaf which the caterpillar will eat – each type of caterpillar likes only certain types of leaves. Since they are tiny and cannot travel to a new plant, the mother caterpillar needs to hatch its egg on the kind of leaf it wants to eat. Caterpillars need to eat and eat so they can grow quickly. When a caterpillar is born, they are extremely small. When they star eating, they instantly start growing and expanding. Their exoskeleton (skin) does not stretch or grow, so they grow by “molting” (shedding the outgrown skin) several times while it is growing.
The pupa stage is one of he coolest stages of a butterfly’s life. As soon as a caterpillar has reached its full length or weight, it changes itself into a pupa, also known as a chrysalis. This is the stage of developing.
Finally, when caterpillar has fully grown adult if you are lucky, you will see an adult butterfly emerge. When the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, both of the wings are soft and folded against its body. The butterfly will be able to fly after the blood circulation reaches its wings.

12.              The text is about …
A.      the growth of butterfly.
B.      the characteristics of a butterfly.
C.      fully grown butterfly.
D.     the lifecycle of a butterfly.
E.      the reproductive system of a butterfly.

A.      lay eggs.
B.      start eating.
C.      search.
D.     form a chrysalis.
E.      emerge a beautiful butterfly.

14.              Why does the mother butterfly choose to lay her eggs on her certain place?
A.      To make the mother butterfly feel comfortable.
B.      To make the caterpillar feel comfortable.
C.      To make the eggs hatch soon.
D.     To make the eggs safe.
E.      To make the caterpillar find food easily.

Adoption is the process by which people take a child who was not born to them and raise him  or her as a member of their family. By law, adopted children differ from foster children. An               adopted child has all the legal rights of a member of the family that raises him or her. A foster child does not.
Parents place their children up for adoptions for many reasons. Some parents feel they cannot adequately care for their off springs because of health or economic conditions. Some others, especially unwed parent, may not want to raise a child.
But there are couples who cannot have children of their own. Adoption gives them opportunity to raise a family. They can get one from an adoption agency if they have all the requirements asked.
State laws prohibit adoption agencies from revealing the identity of the natural parents to the adoptive parents. These laws also forbid agencies from disclosing the identity of the adoptive parents to the natural parents. In some states, the law permits adopted persons who are at least 18 years old to see their birth certificates including the natural parents’ name.
On the contrary, many adopted people worked to change the laws. They argue that people have a right to know their identity. They said that keeping secret their adoptions records violate their right.
On the other hand, many people feel adoption records should be kept secret. If not, natural parents might change their minds years later and take the child away from the parents who raised him or her.
Some experts advise that a child should know of the adoptions by the age of 6 or 7. Surveys have shown that most adopted children develop normally.

Hacking: Pro and Contra?
Do you know what a hacker is? A hacker is a person who enjoy exploring the details of a programmable system on computers and he or she likes to stretch the capability of the system. The activities they do in the computers are called ‘hacking’.
So, what’s the problem with ‘hacking and its hackers’? The problem is whether ‘hacking and its hackers’ is legal or illegal. What I mean is that people  in the world have many different views about hacking and the hackers. Some of them take sides, but many object.
To get back to what I was saying previously, let us see the positive points of a hacker, shall we? Although in most places breaking into computer systems is considered illegal, I believe that hackers don’t do anything illegal because they only want to know and try the system. I dare to say that a hacker likes finding the strengths and the weaknesses of a computer system. They feel proud if  they can find the weaknesses. So I don’t really see the crimes in this case. In addition, these hackers sometimes help the police catch the ‘white collar criminals’, such as bank robbers, money launderers, credit card forgers. For example, in 2000, the U.S. hackers caught some Singaporean hackers who made ‘Virus Love’ to break up the programs of the U.S National Security system.
Nevertheless, those who object to the good points of a hacker say that hacking  is a crime. The reason is that some  hackers use their brilliant skills to break into banks and other vital institutions where they can get money and destroy information, and the worst thing is they can get secret information and sell it to another country. This is a treachery.

9.    Which of the following activities done by hackers is considered illegal?
A.    Finding the strengths and weaknesses of a computer system.
B.     Helping the police catch the white collar criminals.
C.     Feeling proud of finding the system weaknesses.
D.    Breaking into vital institutions’ network system.
E.     Helping to improve the safety system of computer.
10.         The main idea of the fourth paragraph is ….
A.    hackers are criminals
B.     hackers are responsible for their duties
C.     hackers get money from vital institutions
D.    hackers have brilliant skills for the goodness
E.     hackers use brilliant skills to help other people

11.          We can infer from the text that hackers ….
A.    are not loyal to their country
B.     do something without any crime
C.     always help the police to fight against criminals
D.    are responsible for the damage to your computer
E.     can turn to be criminals due to the money orientation

Beggars have become a big problem for us today. They come as street musicians, street boys, “sick people”, “lost” people, or just beggars. As their number is getting bigger, the municipal government feels the need to set a regulation to ban beggars. Many people support this.
They say that begging makes people lazy and bad survivors. They are like parasites. Criminals take advantage of their existance. Car drivers are strong-armed in ceossroads, motorbikes are seized, trucks are hijackeddd, etc. A man in a rural area takes them to the city with his truck in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. They have made an agreement to share what they get. Some children are reported to have been kidnapped not for ransom. They are forced to beggars.

Some people, however say that we must help beggars. They become beggars because they have no choice. What they get everyday is only enough for buying food. Being beggar is better than being a thief or a robber. So it is a high time to apply their religious teaching to care for others. I addition, what they do is to help the government to check crime-rates.
Despite the controversy of their existence, beggars continue to color the life of urban people.

12.         What do you thonk about the man who transports beggars from their villages to the city?
A.    He is generous.

It was the dawn of science and technology. Anything seemed possible –even the creation of life itself. Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with this idea and works relentlessly to prove his theories; but the glory he imagined becomes a living nightmare –not only for him, but for his friends and family too.
Mary Shelley’s gothic horror story- Frankenstein-was first published in 1818 and has been the inspiration behind numerous stage productions and films – many of which strayed a long way away from her original masterpiece. Classical Comics presenting a full-colour graphic novel remains true to this classic tale, bringing the original story to life which has never been created before.
This graphic novel is available in two versions: Original Text and Quick Text editions.  The Original Text stays faithful to Shelley’s original text, while the Quick Text brings the story up to date by presenting the text into a more simplified style so that the tale is accessible to all readers.
The Quick Text edition will allow you to soak up a general feeling for the characters and locations, while the Original Text version will help you easily slip into the language in which the novel was written.
Even if you’re not studying the original, this graphic novel is worth buying. It’s a great story, and should be one that everyone has the chance to read. Now, thanks to this release, even those who don’t particularly like to read too much are given the chance to find this tale and hopefully it may encourage them to search out the original book too.
As with previous Classical Comics, the presentation is first class. The best grade glossy paper really helps to set this graphic novel head and shoulders above the usual comic book releases on the market. 2012 film

2012 is Roland Emmerich’s film which uses the Mayan calendar and other end of-days prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It images the world coming to an end in 2012.
2012 film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. it  starts when Cussack drives a limo through the streers of Los Angeles as freeways and skyscrapers crumble all round him from the shock of a 10.5 R.S. earthquake. The preposterous flying sequence is equally thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark, when an equipment malfunction threatens almost the entire mission.
Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the necessary clarity. In 2012 film, Emmerich’2012 leaves us confused as to exactly what is happening to whom. However, emmerich’2012 deserves credit for casting Cussack.
McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet’s cocky. Danny Glover lends dignity to the role of the president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bugeyed radio prophet trying to warm his listeners about Armagedon.
All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up. Adam Lambert, who provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.

E.   the giant ark will save some people from the earthquake

When author Nicholas Sparks sat down to write The Notebook, a tender love story inspired by the enduring relationship of his wife Cathy’s grandparents, he wanted  his readers to walk away wiyh a renewed spirit of hope.
“I’ll never forget watching those two people flirt,” he recalls. “I mean, you don’t see that very often. They’d been married 67 years, and yet they still loved each other. I wanted to write a book about that kind of love. I wanted people to know that unconditional love does exist.
So Sparks created The Notebok, the simple story of Noah Calhourn, a soft spoken North Carolina outdoorsman who carried his love for the willowy Allie Nelson with him along after their youthful romance had ended. He paralled Noah’s silent passions with Allie’s haunting thoughts – feelings she could not escape even after she became engaged to another man. He asked his readers to consider what it might mean if these relatively happy, middle-aged people found their destinies once again overlapped.
He presented questions all but universal in appeal: what would happen if two people were given a second chance at the love of a lifetime.
Sparks deftly answers that question. But it’s the inspiration drawn from his real life grandparents that makes The Notebook more than just a novel of flames reignited. The novel opens and closes with an elderly Noah Calhourn reading aloud from his personal journals and “notebook”. And as he shares the delicate details, the good with the bad, it’s clear he is AS ENCHANTED WITH Allie in old age as he was on the day they met.

What is water pollution? Water pollution is what happens when factories, wastewater treatment plants, construction sites, and people put things in the water that make it dirty.  At one time , factories dumped  untreated waste into the water. This is an example of water pollution. Not only does water pollution come from what is dumped into the water, but what is dumbed on the land. When you put trash in a storm drain, toilet or in a body of water (rivers, lakes, streams, oceans) it causes the water to be polluted. Just think, if someone were changing their oil on their car and they dumped the oil on the ground, what would happen? Would you want to eat the fish that came from a waterway where you knew that oil went? Even today, accidents on ships and off-shore drilling rigs spill oil into the oceans. Animal waste run off from livestock feedlots seep into groundwater, lakes, rivers and streams that eventually make it to the ocean. Fertilizers and pesticides wash off from fields and forests and ssoak into lakes, rivers, streams and ground water. Wastes from mines drain into water. Garbage disposals and toilets are also a large waste contributor.

A.    sources of water pollution are varied
B.     some materials are potential pollutants
C.     water pollution is caused by many factors
D.    human activitiesare main causes of pollution

Solar energy evaporates exposed water from seas, lakes, rivers and wet soil, the majority of this evaporation takes place over the seas. Water is also released into the atmosphere by the plants through photosynthesis. During this process, known asevapotranspiration, water vapour rises into the atmosphere.
Clouds are formed when air becomes saturated with water vapour. The two major types of cloud formation are stratified or layered grey clouds called surutus and followingwhite or dark grey cloud called cumulus clouds.
Precipitation as rain or hail ensures the heated water returns to earth’s surface ina fresh form. Some of this rain, however, falls into the seas and is not accessible to humans. When rain falls, it either washes down hill slopes or seeps underground, when snow and hail melt, this water may also shrink into the ground.
